Types of Sections: Q&A or Variable Capture and Text Generation
Learn the difference between the two Section types in Jamy and when to use each one.

In the app, you choose a Section type on the Type step when creating or editing a Section. The two options are:
Note: In older Jamy documentation, these were called Generation Components and Form Components. They are now labelled Text Generation and Q&A or Variable Capture in the UI.
Text Generation Sections
A Text Generation Section is a numbered set of instructions that Jamy follows to produce a specific piece of text in your Meeting Report.
You can add as many instructions as you like. Each instruction appears in order, and Jamy uses the full list to generate the output. The Summary Section is a Text Generation Section — it is the best-known example.
How it works
You write one instruction at a time (for example, “Summarise the key decisions made in the meeting”).
Select Add Instruction to add it to the list.
Jamy processes the meeting recording and transcript against those instructions.
The result appears as a text block in the Meeting Report.
The more specific your instructions, the better the output. Good instructions define:
What to include (topics, tone, audience)
How to structure the text (bullets, paragraphs, headings)
What to avoid (speculation, repetition, jargon)
In the report
Text Generation Sections render as editable narrative content — the kind of section you see with Summary or a custom analysis block.
When to use Text Generation
Meeting summaries and executive briefs
Interview assessments and coaching feedback
Sales call analysis or deal summaries
Any Section where the output should read as prose rather than a form
Example use cases
Summary — concise overview of the meeting
English Level — evaluate fluency, vocabulary, and clarity from the recording
Action recap — narrative summary of commitments and next steps
Q&A or Variable Capture Sections
A Q&A or Variable Capture Section (Form type) consists of items — fields, questions, or variables — that Jamy fills in based on the meeting content.
Each item has:
Name — the label shown in the report (for example, “Budget discussed” or “Years of experience”)
Type — the format of the answer
Description — guidance that helps Jamy know how to answer that item
This type is especially useful when you want to gather structured data: customer attributes, qualification scores, specific yes/no answers, dates, or choices from a fixed list.
How it works
Add an item with a name, type, and description.
Select Add item (or Add Item in the full editor) to save it to the Section.
Repeat for each field you need.
Jamy analyses the meeting and populates each item with the appropriate value.
The report shows the Section as a structured list of name–value pairs.
Example: Customer Discovery
A Customer Discovery Section might include items such as:
In the report, each item appears with its name and the value Jamy extracted or inferred from the meeting.
Item types
These are the field types available when building a Q&A or Variable Capture Section:
For Select and Multi Select items, enter your options as a comma-separated list (for example, Low, Medium, High). Jamy will pick from those options when filling in the report.
For all other item types, use the Description field to explain how Jamy should answer — for example, “Answer with the specific number of years mentioned, plus a brief note on relevant roles.”
When to use Q&A or Variable Capture
CRM-style data capture from calls
Scorecards and qualification checklists
Compliance or discovery questionnaires
Any Section where you need predictable, structured fields rather than free-form text
Choosing the right type
You can combine both types in a single Template. For example, a sales Template might include:
Text Generation — deal summary and next-step narrative
Q&A or Variable Capture — budget, timeline, decision-maker, and competitor fields
Where to set the Section type
When creating a Section, choose the type on the Type step:
Q&A or Variable Capture — “Create a form with specific questions or variables that Jamy will fill out based on the meeting content”
Text Generation — “Create a section that generates specific text based on instructions you provide”
You can create a Section in two places:
Templates → Create Template or edit a Template → Content step → Create New
The full Create Section editor (
/quick-access/create)
On the first step, you can also choose Generate with AI and describe the Section you need — Jamy will suggest the type, items, or instructions for you. You can review and adjust everything before saving.
How each type appears in a Meeting Report
Text Generation Sections appear as narrative text blocks (like Summary).
Q&A or Variable Capture Sections appear as labelled fields with values — ideal for scanning structured information quickly.
Both types can be added to a Template in advance, or appended to an individual report afterwards via Add New Report Section on a processed meeting in Recordings.
Test before you deploy
Use Tests Section to run a Section against an existing report before adding it to a Template. Pick a report from Recordings, create a test, and compare the prompt with the result. This is useful for refining instructions or item descriptions.
Summary
Text Generation = numbered instructions → narrative text output.
Q&A or Variable Capture = named items with types and descriptions → structured name–value output.
The Summary Section is a Text Generation Section.
Use Text Generation for prose; use Q&A or Variable Capture for structured data.
Both types can live in the same Template.
